A main source of income on Vatulele is the production of tapa. For making tapa all you need is the bark of a specific tree (Paper Mulberry tree). You have to club it until it is about 10 times as wide (which may take all day) and then ink it with special patterns. You will need a lot of strength for the job, that means it is done by women. |
